CHARACTERS: JW | Deuteronomy | Shirley | Noelle | Jeff
Hawksaw is one of my very oldest stories, if not THE oldest story that has survived to the modern day.
It's about a guy from Tennessee named JW who falls through a time rift in 1974. He was in the rift for a long time, but as soon as he leaves it, he forgets everything that happened inside it. The rift spits him out in Hawksaw, a sleepy little town in 2007 Mississippi. He has to grapple with this along with the guilt from the murder he claims to have committed. To make things worse, the rift seems to have split something deep inside his mind, causing figures from The Mindscape to start speaking to him and through him. The Mindscape is a collection of inner worlds that exists inside of EVERYONE, made up of beings that represent parts of their psyche. The Mindscape is rarely glimpsed by the people of Earth Proper. It's something that runs in the background. I mention this early because JW also has schizophrenia. I don't want people to think I don't know how that disorder works. He has that AND all this supernatural/Mindscape shit going on for him at the same time and it sucks real bad!!!. I think people with mental disabliaties should be the main characters of weird supernatural stories more often. Source: i have a mental disability. more than one actually
Anyway, the police don't believe JW when he admits to his crime. He claims to be a man who went missing thirty years ago and doesn't look a day out of his twenties. He's brushed off and set loose on the streets. As JW finds his footing in Hawksaw with the help of some kind-hearted and not so kind-hearted people, he finds himself the caretaker of a spooky old house overlooking the town. The house turns out not to be as empty as everyone told him it was. He meets Deuteronomy, a taxidermy nightmare of a wolf who at first wants him OUT of her house. She's conviced he's there to have it demolished. A whole misadventure concerning a different taxidermy monster and a burning house (different house lmao) later, they come to work together and agree to share the house so long as JW protects it and keeps its secrets.
After JW thwarts the beast known as Fever Dream, a policeman named Bugle makes a deal with him. If JW keeps the otherworldly threats that plague the little town at bay, he'll sponsor his healthcare. JW has never had access to mental health resources before, so he takes the deal. He is officially diagnosed and starts trying out different medications to see which ones help him with the least awful side effects. He starts making friends with the people in town, including his neighbor Shirley who was also put on the hill by the Do Good girls as an act of charity that they could gloat about.
JW and Deuteronomy have various adventures in Hawksaw as they combat monsters, ghosts, fairies, and The American Healthcare System. As of this writing, I have two books written as well as a handful of short stories. I haven't published any of these yet though. My current plans for publication are kind of up in the air. I can't decide if I want to make the Hawksaw stories into an omnibus or individual books or even web serials. IDK!
CHARACTERS: Maurice | Meranda
READ: The Dogtrot Murder
The Dogtrot Murder is about a mechanic with a drinking problem who one day finds himself turned into a vampire! Everything kind of goes down hill form there, lol. It features Maurice, one of my older OCs and a whole cast of characters that I'm excited to introduce people to. He spends most of his time with his coworker, Meranda, as she spirals about SOMETHING while he tries to keep his whole vampire thing under wraps. Also someone is murdering people in town and leaving them with their throats ripped out. The vampires that live in town suspect Maurice of being the culprit because he has no idea what he's doing. The person that turned him skipped town and left him in a hole.
The stories aren't overly complicated, they aren't meant to be. I just want to put my guy in a situation and watch what happens. I think more books should have fat main characters. Source: i am fat. I also plan to have Maurice explore his gender and sexuality over the course of the stories. The book's tone is what I would call "Goosebumps for grownups". Did I mention the illustrations? All my books are going to have pictures because adults deserve pictures!!! I will die on this hill.
I have completed, illustrated, and published the first book of this series! I plan for there to be several. I have two more in the works at the moment. I'd also love to write short stories from the POV of the rest of the characters. You might see some characters from Dogtrtot pop up in Hawksaw eventually! TDM's timeline starts in 2008.
CHARACTERS: Roman | Olee | Suur | Bev
I'm still deciding on what to call this, but this is a story featuring a gaggle of characters who are called The Unlucky. Basically, they were tricked (or entered willingly) into service as deal-making demons. And angels. They're the same "thing" but look different depending on...you know what, it's not important. ANYWAY. The story hops around from character to characer, so there's no real main character. The characters all have their own story but eventually all of them become this kind of band of misfits as they all try to find ways out of their deals to become human again.
The first story in this serise I wrote is called Terms & Conditions and features a college kid named Roman who gets hit by a truck in 1995. He'd been smoking at the time, something he was keeping a secret from his parents who he still lived with, and was distraught when faced with the thought that they'd find out only after he was dead. Luckily (???) a figure approaches him and offers to make sure his parents never find out (how did he he know???) in return for a favor. Being disoriented and in a lot of pain, Roman agrees and ends up taking his place as an Unlucky. Roman calls buillshit and the Unlucky is like "eh, that's fair" and gives him an out to his contract. If he can tell his parents his secret, he'll become a normal guy again. The kicker is, with the last of his magic, the Unlucky stole Roman's memories of his parents. So he can't...find them to tell them.
In order to regain his memory, he has to make deals. The bigger and more lopsided the deal, the more memory he gets back. Roman's a good kid, so he doesn't set out to screw people over. Things change though as he starts granting wishes and sees just how awful and selfish people are. He eventually morphs into a kind of antagonist that the other Unlucky characters he runs into have to deal with. I think it's fun to write a story from the POV of a villain even if he is just a math tutor that can breathe fire.
CHARACTERS: Dawn | Debby | Iggy | Wildcat | (Currently Unnamed Demon)
Cafe Creeps is a VERY loose story that I am cobbling together using characters that I've adopted from other people! They're all anthro cats. I haven't decided if all the human-stand ins are cats or if there are other species of anthros. The worldbuilding isn't very solid yet and idk if it ever will be. The story mostly focuses on Dawn, a medium that uses her powers to help ghosts with their love lives while ignoring her own.
A thing about the CC crew is that at first I was determined to ONLY EVER have the artwork of them that existed be by other people as an exercise in stepping back and being More Chill. But I really wanna draw the big orange demon with the tummyface. I have some things I wanna add to his design.
CHARACTERS: Helen | Chowder | Ervin | Blake
Magic Book Story (because I haven't figured out a good title for it yet) is currently being developed as a oneshot wlw romance novella/book (honestly it is very simple so i dont it getting very long) with a supernatural theme. It follows Helen, a mail carrier, who ends up falling into a magical book and getting turned into a werewolf. She has to study the book to find out how to change herself back. Meanwhile, Chowder, a failgirl demon for hire is summoned by the headless ghost of an evil magician named Ervin to find the book for him and bring it back. She's very motivated to finish this deal because if she does, it will be the last deal of her contract. She'll be human at last. Chowder and Helen have a meetcute and oh nooooooo they are in looooooooove but neither of them has told the other that they're a monster girl! Don't you love contrivances??? So while Helen and Chowder are fucking around, Ervin is getting more and more impatiant about not having his magic book. Tension???? I dont know, lol.
I actually have a skeletal outline of this book finished, I just have to...write it. Some day.
CHARACTERS: Harold | Merrygold | Jack
This entry is actually kind of a blanket summery of stuff I've got cooking. I don't have any stories outlined yet and am really taking my time wiht the worldbuilding. But Zahaho is a headworld that is in the same universe as all my other stuff but is on a different Horizon. Horizons are just what I call dimensions/plains/realms/whathaveyou because I wanted to be cool and different.
ANYWAY, it's a fantasy themed world with like sphinxes and centaurs and dragons and giants and stuff. I'd LIKE to do something different with those tropes and really take time to develop a culture and a world. The thing I've put the most work into so far is my centaur-like people called the Hrasae. I'm still coming up with a unique name for the giants (which are insect based) and sphinxes. I just call them sphinxes because well they're people faced winged cats and idk what else to call them right now. I may add more features to them as they develop.
The scattered story ideas are:
Ikhidah, a young island Hrasae woman who discovers that she was born outside the breeding cycle and is therefore a burden on her god's brow so she throws herself into the ocean. When her attempt doesn't work, she finds herself on the mainland of Zahaho, a place her cult-like faith has spoken ill of since she was tiny. She finds other Hrasae there who are not part of her faith. It takes her a long time to accept both these other Hrasae and also herself. Can you tell I have religious trauma???
Another story is about a Hrasae named Harold who was taken in by a nomadic band of infamous man-eating women and his sphinx girlfriend Merrygold and I literally have no plot for them. All I know is that they are in love. I'll figure out something for them to do eventually ahaha.
A third story is about a teacher named Roark who has moved to a new town that APPARANTLY gets harassed by a traveling god once a year who is a huge asshole and turns everything upside down for everyone just to amuse himself. Roark is like "fuck this" because Wystic (the god) transformed his unborn daughter into a lamb and sent his wife into a spiral. He decides to take things into his own hands.
The last story I have for the moment is actually the oldest story in this setting! It's about a girl named Sito who ends up getting her family captured by the corrupt King and has to go on a journey to gather up the bravery to confront the king and get them back. She has a wolf pelt she uses to transform into a wolf and ends up roaming around with a traveling circus. She makes friends with a young nerdy Hrasae named Trihpz and they have a lot of bad ideas together.
