Twisted World Spirits
Okay, here's the thing. We don't know a ton about ghosts. What we do know is: they used to be something else.Maybe a fleshy thing like a person or a rabbit. Maybe a tree. Maybe a mountain range. Or a city. A car. A ghost is something that has existed in the world's consciousness to a significant degree and then gone through the transformative process of dying. What does it mean to die? To be forgotten. For your cells to stop reproducing, causing your organs to fail resulting in brain death. To outlive one's purpose. To become a pariah.
Spirits used to be something else and that something has died. Now, whether a spirit is the actual specific creature lingering in this world past its original expiration or a new entity birthed from the transition of death remains to be seen. Perhaps omething being left over after death. Afterbirth. Shade. Shadow. The Ghost Of You.
They are unpredictable and come in many descriptions. A spirit can look like the literal thing that died. It can appear as a shape more easily understood by the human eye accented with symbolic or otherwise aesthetics. Perhaps it appears as the collective memory recalls it, given larger than life features. Legends, folk heroes.
There does seem to be some kind of Beyond that spirits are proceeding to. Its nature is currently unknown. Being a ghost is an in-between phase.
There are some spirits that have similar enough traits to be put into a category.
I leave it mysterious and vague so as not to write myself into a corner and because I think having ghosts without many hard set rules makes the stakes a little higher.
